Now that summer is just around the corner, there’s not doubt we will be spending more time in the garden trying to make the most of the great British sunshine.

If like us you are one of those people who love spending time in the garden, we have some great ways for you to add boho chic accessories to your space. Wind chimes are a lovely addition to any garden, or window, making a colourful statement, whilst playing you soothing melodies as the wind blows.

To give you inspiration, we have created a handy how to guide, so that you can create your own beaded windchime.

Getting Started

In order to suspend your wind chime and hang your stringing beads, you will need to drill around 6 evenly spaced holes into your piece of wood or other foundation material of your choice.

Typically, the foundation of a wind chime is created from a rod made from materials such as copper, plastic or wood; You can however make it from any material that you choose.  To keep with the enchanted garden theme, driftwood would be best suited.

If it isn’t thick enough to create holes, or if you don’t have a drill, you can simply tie your craft wire around the wood instead.

Creating Your Chimes

To make your decorative chimes, you will need coloured craft wire and a selection of any beads you like.  We would recommend using Glass Beads, as they make the best tunes.

Next, take 6 strands of coloured craft wire and cut them to your desired length. Then, using your choice of beads, simply thread them onto the wire to create your own design. The Indian Glass Bead Mixes give you an assortment of shapes and styles to choose from, making them great for a project such as this. Make sure you leave enough wire at the top to tie it to the wood once you have finished.

Once you have completed a line of beads, add a feature bead on to the end. This will not only weigh down the wire, but add a great finishing touch. You can experiment with different shapes and sizes, such as a Swarovski Crystal Pendants, or a Czech Glass Bell Flower beads.

Piecing It All Together

Once you have finished stringing all of your beads together, take the excess wire and securely attach it to your piece of wood. You can do this either by feeding it through the drill holes and making a knot at the end, or looping it around the wood.  Make sure they are spaced out evenly and not placed too closely together.

Finally, to hang the windchime, you can attach a piece of craft wire to a jewellery finding or connector for a quirky centerpiece.
