Amethyst is a lilac to purple variety of the mineral Quartz. It forms beautiful crystals inside volcanic lava bubbles known as "geodes".
Due to it's beautiful colour, Amethyst is one of the most popular gemstones.
The name derives from the Greek "amethystos", which means "not drunken" as the ancient Greeks believed Amethyst prevented drunkenness.
Amethyst deposits have been found at very high altitudes in the Himalayan mountains. This stone is therefore considered sacred by Tibetan Buddhist monks, who use Amethyst beads when stringing prayer beads.
