    What Is Agate?

Agate is a very fine grained form of Quartz most of which originate from Brazil.

The stone is formed when gas bubbles form in liquid volcanic lava bubbles, these bubbles cool and harden forming nodules in the rock. Agate is an extremely hard rock which requires diamond saws cut the stone, it is then polished to remove any imperfections and dyed to enhance and display the beautiful natural banding within.

Crazy lace Agate is a very fine grained form of Quartz most of which originate from Mexico. It differs from other agates due to its irregular 'crazy' stripe patterns and golden brown colouring.

    Colour and Pattern

Agate occurs naturally in a wide range of colours, including greys, browns, whites, blues, greens, and reds. Some stones are left close to their natural tones, while others are dyed to emphasise banding or introduce stronger colour.

The layered structure means no two agate stones look the same. Bands may be sharp or soft, evenly spaced or irregular, depending on how the stone formed.

Moss Agate has a green organic, vegetation appearance running through the stone. Although the appearance looks like moss or plant life trapped within the rock, it is actually formed if iron oxides exist within the rock. Working With Agate

Agate beads and stones are straightforward to work with using standard jewellery tools.

Drilled agate beads string cleanly on wire, thread, or cord. Cabochons and flat-backed pieces can be set into bezels or bonded into trays using a suitable jewellery adhesive.

Because agate is harder than glass, care should be taken when tightening settings or using pliers near the surface to avoid chipping.

    Agate Stone Meaning and Associations

Agate has long been associated with balance, stability, and grounding. Historically, it was used in carved seals, amulets, and protective objects across many cultures, valued for both its strength and its layered appearance.

In modern crystal traditions, agate is often linked with calm focus and emotional steadiness. The banded structure is said to symbolise balance and harmony, making agate a popular choice for jewellery intended for daily wear rather than occasional use.

Different colours of agate are commonly associated with different qualities. Neutral and earth-toned agates are linked with grounding and resilience, while brighter dyed agates are often chosen for confidence, creativity, or visual impact rather than symbolic meaning.

Whether selected for its appearance or its traditional associations, agate remains one of the most widely used semi-precious stones in jewellery making due to its durability and visual depth.
