Janet Hope -Designer Interview
When and how did you start making jewellery?
I was a Flight Attendant for about 20 years and stayed in many hotel rooms around the world and needed something to occupy my mind, that was light and small to carry around – and I came across beading . Whilst the rest of the crew were out shopping in the malls, I was ensconced in my room – beading! It was great because many of the crew wanted jewellery to match their newly acquired outfits and I had the pleasure to design and make their jewellery.
Did you have any formal training?
No – self taught.
What is the highlight of your jewellery making career so far?
Teaching – I love to teach!
Where do you find your inspiration?
From Laura McCabe, who makes the most wonderful designs. Also from old jewellery – e.g. Victorian designs.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of setting up a business to sell their jewellery designs?
Do not under-estimate your own work and value. Perseverance. Local hotels, boutiques etc are an excellent way to display your jewellery. When displaying, keep to a colour or theme.
Any things else you would like to add?
I am passionate about beading, it helps me relax (even when I go wrong), helps keep me sane (!) and most of all – it makes me happy
