Turquoise is an opaque Gemstone that has been prized all over the world for thousands of years with some of the oldest examples being those featured in ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to 3000BC. It has been esteemed as a bringer of good fortune for centuries.
Completely natural Turquoise is very rare, and in fact, only 3% of all Turquoise worldwide has not been treated in some way.
Historically, Turquoise has been subjected to various treatments to enhance both its colour and durability, originally by light waxing and oiling through to more contemporary methods such a stabilizing.
Stabilized turquoise, which is what we have here, is a soft ‘chalk’ turquoise that is too soft and brittle to simply be cut and polished into a bead or stone, so instead has been stabilized by filling the tiny holes and crevices in the porous stone with a clear epoxy resin. The resin is absorbed into the rock which permanently hardens it and deepens the colour and makes it a lot more resistant to discolouration and scratches.
