Choosing stringing materials carefully

Stringing materials will make a huge difference to your piece of jewellery, even if you plan to have beads covering the string for the entire length. This is because an awful lot of beads are transparent or translucent, so you can see through them a little. This will create a different coloured bead (e.g. a red cord through a white bead may make the bead appear pink).

Even if you are using wooden beads or other opaque beads, when wearing a piece of jewellery you will be able to see the stringing material from time to time between the beads.

If your jewellery will only be partly beaded, it is even more important choosing the right material. Some beads look wonderful on waxed cord, whereas others would only really work on wire or a chain. If you are attaching headpins, it is a good idea to choose a chain with oval shaped loops, to give the headpins more space to move around and not distort the natural hanging place of the chain.

Likewise, if you have only one large accent bead, you can usually play around more with the colour and material of the string as the pendant will probably work with more than one type, giving a different style, impression or feel, depending on which material is chosen. Remember that if you are using thread, elastic or leather, you will need to work out a way of fastening it, unless you are happy with it just being tied in a knot.
